Shema Style 1
The most central prayer in Judaism is the Shema which begins with the phrase "Shema Yisrael, Adonai, Elohenu, Adonai Echad" which translates to "Hear O' Israel, the Lord is Our God, the Lord is One." The following paragraph known as the v'Ahavta is a continuation of the Shema, and commands us to love our God and keep these words in your heart and mind throughout your day, every day, and teach our children to do the same. The first two paragraphs of this prayer are written on the parchment which is protected within a Mezuzah case and so it is a part of every Jewish home. This prayer is also one of the prayers within the boxes of tefillin (phylacteries) which are worn during morning prayers. The Shema is recited every day at every synagogue service. It is the most well known prayer in all of Judaism. The full English Translation is: And you shall love The Lord your God With all your heart, all your soul and all your might. And these words that I command you shall be this day on your heart. You shall teach them to your children and speak of them when you sit in your home when you walk on the road when you lie down and when you rise. Tie them for a sign on your hand and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
